Known as the "Coal Region Artist", Joe Evanousky was born and raised in Shenandoah, PA, a small town located in northeastern Schuylkill County, in the heart of the "Hard Coal Region". He began drawing at an early age with the help of his father, Joe "Posey" Evanousky, who worked in the Shen-Penn Strippings.

Joe completed both his undergraduate and postgraduate studies at Kutztown State College, receiving his Bachelor of Science in Art Education in 1975 and his Master of Art Education degree in 1982. While enrolled in a graduate drawing course, he began depicting the life of the Anthracite miner. His original charcoal drawing resonates with people touched by the miners' spirit and everyday struggle to survive.
